A Cocky Champion Pushed the Janitor Away — Unaware She Had Once Ruled the Ring

The first thing the crowd noticed was the sound of the bucket tipping over. The second was the woman who landed on her hands beside it.

Water crawled across the polished concrete at the edge of the boxing ring, carrying a thin gray crescent of dust toward the expensive shoes of sponsors who had paid four hundred dollars apiece to watch a champion work out. Someone laughed. Someone else lifted a phone. Above the ring, the enormous illuminated name of Damon Rusk shone across the warehouse rafters, followed by a slogan that had been chosen by an advertising agency: THE FUTURE DOESN’T WAIT.Damon stood with one gloved hand still extended toward the woman he had pushed. He had meant to move her out of his path, nothing more complicated than that. She had been kneeling by the ring apron, cleaning the tacky stripe left by somebody’s spilled energy drink, and she had failed to move quickly enough when he approached with his entourage. His palm struck her shoulder. She went sideways, and the mop slid against the bucket with a crack that sounded louder than any punch landed during the exhibition.

The woman didn’t cry out. She reached for the bucket before it rolled farther, set it upright, and gathered the fallen mop. Gray braids, twisted into a low knot, had come loose beside her face. Her left knee remained on the floor while she tested the other ankle with an almost imperceptible rotation. The bright orange cleaning vest over her faded navy shirt bore the name of an outside contractor, not the boxing club. Nothing about her suggested an important person to the impatient people gathered near the ring.

“Watch where you’re cleaning, sweetheart,” Damon said.

Another laugh traveled through the semicircle around him. Damon was twenty-nine, undefeated in the professional cruiserweight division, and handsome in a way that cameras rewarded without much work. His shoulders filled a fitted black training shirt. A championship belt lay across a velvet-covered table behind him, near the microphones and a row of bottled drinks. He glanced at the spectators as if expecting applause for his little joke.

The woman stood. She was fifty-eight, solidly built, with a slight stiffness in her right hip. She looked not at Damon but at the widening pool of water.

“Someone will slip,” she said. “Step around it, please.”
