Junior Archaeologist

We are looking to expand our archaeological team. Entry level, full time archaeologist position based out of the Burnaby office. Work will take place throughout British Columbia, in various industries.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in identifying and recording areas of archeological potential, archaeological sites, and traditional use sites.
  • Work closely with a Field Director/Supervisor to make technical recommendations for cultural resources management.
  • Collect field data.
  • Participate in preliminary field reconnaissance surveys and archaeological impact assessments.
  • Assist in archaeological monitoring and excavations.
  • Manage field equipment.
  • Actively participate in Stantec’s HSSE programs.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Interest in cultural resource management.
  • Willingness to learn identification of traditional use sites & features, CMTs, and lithic artifacts.
  • Willingness to learn mapping, pedestrian surveys, subsurface testing, excavation, data collection.
  • Dedicated to following and promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Able to work away from home/stay in hotels or camps for periods of up to 2 weeks during the field season (May-Nov).
  • Desire to work closely with other environmental professionals and First Nations.

Intermediate Protection and Controls Engineer

The substation designer is responsible for all aspects of substation design including P&C design, electrical layout design, equipment & material specifications, studies and calculations for the delivery of our high voltage substation projects. The incumbent will work within a multi-disciplinary team to develop a complete, efficient and reliable substation system packages. You will coordinate the planning and design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of Engineering Manager on various aspects of high-voltage substation Protection & Control Design.
  • Capacity to lead projects through conceptual, design, construction and project close out stages for the discipline you are responsible for.
  • Ability to work within the means of budget and be able to provide documentation for scope changes.
  • Prepare single line diagram, AC & DC schematic, Wiring Diagram, Relay Order Code, Protection Philosophy document, Assist in Relay settings, Design Basis Document for P&C portion, HV equipment data sheets. Test reports for relay and HV equipment.
  • Coordinate with other key disciplines such as Setting, Study, Electrical Layout, SCADA/Telecom, Civil/Structural, Environmental, & Equipment Vendors.
  • Conduct checks and peer reviews for Substation Protection & Control design Packages.
  • Conduct inter-discipline checks for Substation Design Packages to ensure coordination between systems and disciplines such as equipment and layout, etc.
  • Conduct vendor equipment & specification checks to ensure correctness.
  • Provide Technical/RFI support for Construction Activities and Procurement.
  • Conduct Site Visits with Qualified Personnel to review & define project scope of work.
  • Assist in preparing estimates & proposals.
  • Hands on testing & commissioning experience would be considered an asset.
  • Should be able to review design from constructability point of view.
  • Understand and Apply all applicable industry and client standards for High Voltage design and Engineering.
  • Capable of performing power system study and relay settings for major equipment of transmission system and distribution system.
  • Capable to lead Junior Engineers & Technologists.

Education and Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering (Power System preferred).
  • Minimum of 9 years of direct detail Protection & Control experience in HV Substations for Utilities in North America.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer through APEGA or registered as through ASET.
  • Effective Interpersonal Skills – Strong Written and Verbal skills are a must to ensure clear communication between team members, clients, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Able to work effectively both independently under minimal supervision, and as a member of a team.
  • Previous experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD would be an asset.
  • Previous EPC or consulting experience in utility/industrial would be an asset
  • Excellent Personal Computing Skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Geotechnical Field Technician Student

We are currently looking for students to work as Geotechnical Field Technicians within the Geotechnical and Materials Engineering department to be based out of our Saint John, NB office for a summer term commencing May 2019.

Your Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Geotechnical Engineer/ Technician, you will work closely with an impressive team of engineers and technologists, primarily performing field and laboratory QA/QC monitoring and testing services.

Primary duties may include:

  • Construction QA/QC Monitoring and Testing
  • Field and laboratory testing of soil, aggregate, concrete, mortar and bituminous paving mixtures
  • Fill placement and compaction monitoring
  • Fresh and hardened concrete monitoring and testing
  • Deep and shallow foundation construction
  • Assisting in resolution of technical issues on construction sites
  • Various other QA/QC field and laboratory testing services as required

Reporting

You will be required to regularly complete detailed field and laboratory reports and submit them to the laboratory manager

Operations

  • You will be expected to support team operations and play an integral part in the success of the project
  • Promotion of our health and safety culture, client relations, training and mentoring of more junior staff, equipment and resources maintenance and management, and other related duties will be expected

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to communicate effectively with technical and management personnel remotely
  • Ability to work up to 12 hours per day, 6 days per week (weekend and overtime work will be required)
  • Available to work on out of town projects, typically 1 to 2 weeks but as long as 3 to 4 weeks at a time
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • A valid Driver’s License is required
  • CCIL/CSA certification for concrete field and laboratory testing is required. Training will be provided in order to receive the certification

Business Center Managing Leader – Power

Reporting directly to the Regional Leader (RL) and Power Regional Business Leader (RBL), The BCML is responsible and accountable for the BC’s operations/financial management and providing support to the Business Center Sector Leader (BCSL) and Business Center Discipline Leader (BCDL) regarding delivery of professional services throughout Western Canada. The BCML implements effective business strategies and motivates other team leaders and project managers within the BC to deliver on targeted objectives. The BCML is expected to maintain contact with key clients by taking part in business development activities, contributing to proposals and projects, reviewing client agreements, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages operations, ensures the effective delivery of professional services, and drives financial performance for the Power BC, within the Western Canada region and is responsible to achieve budgeted net revenue, gross margin, and SG&A in business center (BC) and region;
  • Sustains and grows the net revenue, gross margin, and operating income;
  • Ensures that Health and Safety key performance indicators are achieved and take the lead on developing a Health and Safety culture within the business center;
  • Maintains client engagement while upholding personal utilization targets;
  • Identifies and actively manages business development and enhancement opportunities;
  • Collaborates directly with regional leaders (RLs), regional business leaders (RBLs), sector leaders (SLs), discipline leaders (DLs), account managers, and business center (BC) leaders, focusing on cross-selling to consistently win new work within the BC and region;
  • Partners with the other leaders to market discipline-specific technical expertise to local and regional clients, as well as global and national clients;
  • Leads by example, encourages innovation, and provides opportunity to staff;
  • Responsible for resource management processes, recruitment, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, and leadership development for the BC;
  • Leads the development of the BC annual budget in collaboration with the BCSL and other BC leaders;
  • Participates in the preparation of the annual BC Strategic Business Plan, outlining the vision, focus and priorities for implementation, and to set specific goals for performance and/or growth for the BC;
  • Ensures compliance with Stantec’s policies, practices, and procedures by all staff within the BC;
  • As necessary, personally pursues and leads significant projects within the business center (BC) and region; and
  • Minimum utilization – 60% (subject to size and demands of the business center [BC]).
